Hello Mohawk families,

Greetings from Mohawk Elementary, the Greatest School in RISD! I am beyond excited for a fresh new school year and I hope you are as well. We have many wonderful things in store for 2018-2019. The first is our theme— “The Greatest School--- it’s the place you want to be!” This is a spin-off of the movie, The Greatest Showman, and we plan to embrace some of the movie’s best messages as our own—inclusion, tolerance, and following dreams just to name a few!

For the past 3 years, Richardson ISD has taken cohorts of elementary schools and trained them on Positive Behavior Intervention Supports, or PBIS. This will be our first year as a PBIS school and the entire staff will be trained when they return back to work. Everyone can expect a greater focus on positive reinforcement for following the behavioral expectations set in hallways, cafeteria, restrooms, and classrooms. RISD schools that have been PBIS schools have seen a decrease in student consequences, an increase in school climate, and an overall increase in satisfaction of staff and students. I look forward to implementing this new system and will share more information with you as the year progresses.

In addition, Richardson ISD has also adopted a new curriculum called Texas Resource System or TRS. This is a rigorous curriculum aligned to our state standards that all teachers will use across the district. Teachers will collaborate together in Professional Learning Communities, or PLCs, to ensure seamless implementation of the new curriculum.

We have a few new people joining our Mohawk team this year! Please give a warm welcome to:

  • …Jordan Fletcher, 2nd grade
  • …Milu Edwards, Special Education Aide
  • …Saundra Foster, Aide in the Structured Learning Classroom
  • …Caitlin Swanson, part time Music teacher
  • …Ashlee Shipp, Cafeteria Manager
  • …Maryvel Avila, Student Data Specialist
  • …Claire Burns, Wendy Griffin’s long-term substitute
  • …Adama Samba, Xplore Coordinator at Mohawk
  • …and still searching for the Material Clerk position

The same people but in different places are Maria Nuccetelli, taking the 5th grade Science position and Taylor Rollins going back to 6th grade Science. Each person, in each position, will be great for our Mohawk family and I can’t wait for you to meet all the new faces!
